| The last story is an Eisner story, isn't it? Where's it from originally?

| The GCD credits the drawing of the Dr. Drew story to Jerry Grandenetti. It originally appeared in Rangers Comics #47. |

| SuperScrounge is right; the Dr Drew story did appear first in Rangers. However this IW issue is actually a reprint of Fiction House's Ghost Comics #10, a late FH title which mixed reprints with new material.
Exactly who drew the first couple of Dr Drew's is still debated. Jim Vadeboncoeur is sure that at the very least Eisner laid the story out but probably did more. On the other hand Michael Gilbert, who produced the Dr Drew reprint hardback, is adamant that it was entirely Grandenetti's work, quoting the artist saying that he was merely copying Eisner's style.
I tend to favor Jim's theory. The fact that the Eisneresque stories were lettered by Abe Kanegson strengthens the impression that those stories originated in the Eisner shop. Going out on a limb, I wonder whether Eisner might have had a hand in writing the story as well. It has his rhythm and is the sort of story I imagine Eisner would come up with for a ghost hunter. Of course this is entirely speculation.
Nevertheless I think it's significant that when the Eisneresque stories stopped, not only the art style but the lettering and the nature of the stories changed abruptly as well. |
