I think the "young man" grinning in the 4th panel with the wavy hair and smattering of freckles is intended to be Van Johnson, not Red Skelton.

I love Lee Elias' work on this series. He never scrimps on backgrounds or crowd scenes...witness page 5, last panel, in which every audience member has an individual personality.

The first comment is 100% right. That's Van Johnson. Bye the way, I remember buying this series when they first came out. In fact, I even recall purchasing Pocket Comics, probably #1, at a Five and Ten cents store(Woolworth's?), where we first get to see The Black Cat. It's great to get to see it all again, on this wonderful treasure trove of Comic Book Plus. Blessings Be Upon You. May you go on forever.

NotesScript credit was previously given to Andriola, but Saunders was the uncredited author for several decades from its beginning, on October 4 1943. These reprints fall between that date and pre-publication date of this issue.

Panels are reshaped and rejigged, with Andriola's signature placed on both first and last pages.

This story was first reprinted in "A-1" (1945, Magazine Enterprises) #[1]. This is the first 8 pages as printed in that comic, except the splash panel is different, the last 2 panels are replaced with a "read next issue to see what happens" blurb, panels are reshaped for the narrower size of the comic, and it has been recolored.
