Now *there's* something I never expected to see! Beginning on page 24, there is a 15-page Captain Midnight epic where he teams up with Spy Smasher! And of course Fawcett had done crossover stories before, but somehow you never expect to see that happen with licensed characters (Captain Midnight was owned by the Wander Corporation, makers of Ovaltine, which sponsored the radio show from which Fawcett drew its comic adaptation -- very loosely, I might add). Spy Smasher had already been a big hit for Fawcett before they got the license to Captain Midnight, so it's not too surprising that when they did, they decided to cast Midnight in a superhero mold largely BASED on the popular Spy Smasher. Putting the two of them *together* in the same story kind of emphasized their suspiciously-similar looks, and you'd have thought that Fawcett would want to avoid pointing that out to kids directly. Still, great story and a really pleasant surprise to discover it here. |
