As good as a draughtsman Lou Fine was, he never could catch the spirit (ha ha) of The Spirit. Most of these stories are disappointing despite occasional nice figure drawing.

When this ran in 1943, it said "Class of '33." Since they re-ran it in 1945 here, they changed it to '35.
But mostly, it was the fashion in those days.
