There is nothing 'new' about that kind of story. Co-incidence or Higher Power. Doesn't answer the question, just poses it.
'Stupidity?' We now know you wouldn't and shouldn't look directly at an Atomic explosion, you would go blind. And then there would be a hot wind.
This was written in 1955 when most had no idea about how Nuclear weapons really worked. And it was fairly typical of the times.
The material on this site is mostly at least 60 years old and as such is History and gives us a window into a world which no longer exists.
