The Ghost Squadron story (starting on page 42) has an unusual character for the time, Tambu, a black woman who is the hero of the story. On my blog, I said, “Though many jungle queens appeared in comics after Sheena inspired the genre, most of those who got their own strip were Europeans or Americans. Tambu never got a strip, but this one story shows she could've been the star of a fine one. If her broken English bothers you, remember that some white jungle kings and queens also spoke English poorly, in part because the movie version of Tarzan spoke it poorly.” |
