Fab cover! From the color blend at the top to the solid colors in the test tubes, it's a super eye catcher. I have to find out more about Gus Ricca! The colorist is unknown: I listened to Robert Crumb in 1984 talk on about the color on old comic book covers, and he said there were all these artisans who worked at the printing plant and did awesome color blends as a matter of routine, so I expect these jaw-dropping colors were applied by one of these guys, putting in a day's work. |

Dynamic Man mystified me for a while, since there was a character of the same name ( and almost the same costume) published by Timely comics and yet 'Dynamic Man appears in the mini-series Project Superpowers.' which is where I first saw him. This series featured characters which were out of copyright, so I wondered why Marvel (Timely) didn't sue. Turns out he was a Chesler character. And in this case, [Dynamic Boy is Ricky McQuade, Dynamic Man's brother and aide, NOT the character in issues #2, 3.] Huh? Still makes my head ache.
This book also featured characters called, Mr E., Sparky Pyroe (ouch!), Dr Doom, the Echo ( a ventriloquist superhero) and Lucky Coyne. What were they smoking over there?
Cheers! |

note the bottom left gag on (our) page 10.
Is that a dig at Goodman's publishing?
Or given it's 1944, is it a gag about rationing?
Or both?
Cheers! |

"Mr. E" and his punny name give me a flashback to running a comic shop in 1975-6 and reading most of what we sold. The king of "going in for that sort of thing" has to be Terry Beatty, whose character Ms. Tree (Get it?) would team up with (also his character) Mike Mist so they were mist-tree stories. I feel like there was a third element in this that I've mercifully forgotten, like her middle name would make her M. S. Tree in correspondence, but won't swear to that one.
He did a whole humor comic by himself (MOD) that was beautifully drawn and not actually funny at all. His recent work on newspaper strips, in my opinion, shows him at his best. |
