NotesSUPER FUN COMICS is an anthology title, published by HE Hoffman in 1947. The comic is mostly by Doug Maxted, with stories featuring DICK WESTON, BIG RICK ROLAND, PIRATE PETE and UNCLE SI, with Leonard Starr contributing RED MASK and HERBIE. (Note: this isn’t the Leonard Starr who contributed to American comics, but is understood to be the penname of Leonard Theodore Miatke. Oddly, cemetery records for Miatke-Starr, Leonard & Theodore indicate that Leonard died on 23 April 5131(!), while Theodore died on 2 June 1968.)

Doug Maxted was born in London, England, but his family relocated to Australia while he was a child, settling in Adelaide. Maxted took up cartooning and initially published by HE Hoffman, and is perhaps best known for his character Dick Weston. Maxted was at home with humour and adventure stories. As the comics market shrank, Maxted became a self-publisher. He also used his dual citizenship to work in both Australia and the UK, where he earned his living in comics, advertising and art direction. At the end of his career, he opted to settle permanently in Australia.

A note on the comic's name: This comic is known as 'Super Comics' and 'Super Fun Comics'. If you look at the indicia of Australian comics, you will often not find the title specified, as is the case with this comic. The title is taken to be what is printed comparatively prominently on the cover, and the positioning and size of the 'Fun' could go either way in whether it's part of the title.
