Mike Shayne not only appeared in comics, films and radio, he was arguably the last of the pulp heroes. MIKE SHAYNE MYSTERY MAGAZINE lasted 30 years, 336 issues with lead Shayne novels from 1956 to 1986.

Actually, there were 337 issues of Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine between Sept 1956 and Aug 1985. I own 200 of those. Shayne stories were written by eleven ghostwriters that identified themselves and many stories came from an unidentified writer. 47 complete issues are online, a FREE pdf download. EVERY issue had a "Shayne story," but there were often longer stories featured by other known writers. Towards the end, the Shayne stories weren't good at all... and then bankruptcy. Oh yes, and there were 70 different paperback novels between 1939 and 1976. I own, have read, all of those too.

Mike Shayne comic #3, the final edition, is a story called, "Heads... You Lose." The original title was, "Blood On The Black Market," written in 1943, dealing with counterfeit gasoline ration coupons during WWII. On page one there was just one sentence... Phyllis Shayne had died in childbirth. ...In 1956, the same book was re-written with a 15-page introduction to explain the absence of Phyllis in 21 books during the past 13 years. Not until 1980, did ghost writer James Reasoner create a Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine novella of the Shayne's mental stress the entire week before Phyllis died. THIS comic attempted to explain this in two panels on page one. Finally, notice on page 9, bottom right corner, a guy with an eye-patch. This would be Davis Dresser, the creator of 34 Mike Shayne books 1939 - 1959.

Nice catch, ChromeTeeth! I'd overlooked that panel. It's Halliday, and what's more that's writer Ken Fitch to his left and artist Edd Ashe to his right. Fitch's name appears on the side of a building in the splash panel of the short story. I love when artists do sneaks like this.
