Well in that case it is Mort Meskin, and I'm pretty sure about that when I look at the women. But I don't know when Ditko started inking for Kirby shop and I still think he had something to do with it. It is the cute little nose accents that throw me off. Mort and Kirby usually try to pretend the nose doesn't exist because it is hard to draw, but it always seems to be Ditko's favorite part. If I was inking for those guys I don't think I would be able to resist tweaking the noses a little bit. They don't look like Simon inks either--the line depth is too sloppy. Almost... Amateurish. I say mort pencils ditko inks. I have no idea what is happening on the cover though, and I haven't looked at the other stories, so they might still give me clues. I am on the case! |

The girl on the cover has a freakishly pinched stomach, but the rest of her appears to be totally healthy. That is an Eisner-ish deformity, but I am not very familiar with those guys. Whoever did the cover did the other two stories and the filler looks like mort again--either self inked or by someone else. Whew, I would be curious to hear from someone who is more familiar with Eisner and his colleagues. I don't think that will give us any clues, though. Does anyone know of an early Ditko ink I could check out? |

This falls into the Thick of his most intricate stuff and I looks he was doing work for a bunch of different publishers, including something called Arnold book company, but no fox. I still think it is mort. Perhaps self-inked, or by someone I don't know. As I look through I don't think I see him doing anything for fox, but it might be a reprint or something else weird. |

Just not good enough for Meskin.
Here he is at Prize the same month:

I think the first story here is Charles Nicholas & an inker. FWIW. (|:{> |

Your right. Ditko cites mort as his biggest influence, but the resemblance doesn't come close to this mystery guy. I can't believe Steve never saw this and drew the way he did. |

This comes up as #2 in the 'most comments' list, so I'll help it along! I've looked at it quite a few times as I've browsed through the site.
I would be inclined to believe that whoever did the second story ' The Ivy invasion' also did the cover, owing to the eyebrows, the man's face and the general inking style. I can see why you might think Ditko, but it's neither Mr D or Mort Meskin. We may never know. |

I understand that Harry Harrison was working for Fox around this time, and it might have been him who drew The Ivy Invasion story. His use of noticeably big eyebrows for the men, eyes drawn with irises having bug-eyed stares, earlobes usually drawn in a way which resemble an “S,” and if nothing else, the way sound effect words are drawn may very well point to Harrison. For example, Harrison’s signed Horror Heads story in Beware #11 (August, 1952) at one point features a gun firing with a red colored “BLAM!” sound effect, which is very similar to the “BLAM!” gunfire on page four of The Ivy Invasion story. I think Wally Wood and Joe Orlando, whom also worked for Fox, had similar styles, though I don’t think people would be as inclined to say that this is Wally Wood or Joe Orlando art. |

I'm a fan of these classic S.F. Stories, in comics, in books and in films. :-) Thanks. :-) |
