This is identical to Magazine Enterprises JET, a.k.a. Jet Powers #1, in every detail but the wraps - I would assume this indicates a rewrapping of remaindered copies, not a new printing. I wonder then if they bought them from the original publisher unfinished, or if some poor chump had to tear off the covers and staple on new ones all day long. That would probably be my job. :) |
|
Not a rewrapped original printing--this is another of cheapskate Israel Waldman's infamous reprints from a big pile of printing plates he acquired somewhere. You'll note the ads here are different from the original ME printing. Waldman replaced the old ads with his own. Apparently the covers were not part of the original material, so IW had to commission new ones. I'm sure he'd have used the old covers if he'd had them, ME logo and all! This is why IW versions of old Fox comics are missing the first story page. In the originals the lead story started on the now-missing inside front cover. Not that it bothered Mr W... |
|
I note that the cover advertises 'Jet Power' not 'Jet Powers' - another legal ruse? I.W. thy name is sleazy. |

Waldman absolutely changed the title of his series from the original for legal reasons. Almost invariably, his "reprints" included less comics pages than the originals, as his issues almost always contained more advertisements than the originals, and often contained less pages, as his were always 36 pages long, while many of the Golden Age comics plates he obtained in going-out-of-business warehouse liquidations came from 52-page books. Often, the titles of his series would not even be remotely similar to the original because he chose a minor character for the cover, as opposed to the lead character of the series. He also gave Trademarked characters new names for the front covers, despite the stories on the inside featuring a currently trademarked character. He could get away with doing that because his comic books were NOT on the regular newsstand and grocery store or 5 and drug store shelves, where copyright and trademark holders, their lawyers, and their family members might see them, but were, instead, sold in bulk in sealed cellophane packages, in five and dime stores, and toy stores, with the outer covers that were seen through the plastic being innocent-looking. Any questionable covers that might lead to his being caught for copyright or trademark infringement were hidden from sight in the middle. |
|
But in the UK, IW comics were not available in cellophane packages but openly and individually on the stands alongside better known brands.
I remember them repackaging Blue Beetle comics as The Human Fly and getting round the Phantom Lady by publishing her adventures in Great Action Comics. They named the Spirit and Plastic Man correctly though. If it weren't for skanky old IW I'd have never discovered these classic characters until years later, if at all! |

My failing memory suggests I didn't see IW comics where I am in Scotland . There were a lot of newsagents and corner shop's with either spinners or a small pile of American comics on the counter. This would be post 1960, although prior to distribution starting, there were sometimes American and Australian titles to be found. I just do not remember seeing IW titles till the '80's at London marts.
It is odd though as there were American bases nearby and comics leaked out from them into local pubs and small shops sometimes. |
