I had accompanied Sheriff Miller to a nearby seaside resort to investigate the murder of a resort owner, a man named Parrish. His assistant told me, "I found Parrish's body several miles up the coast". "Hadn't he been missing for 24 hours", I asked. The assistant replied, "yes, that's right. That's why I started walking up the beach. I discovered a set of footprints I assumed were his, and sure enough, I found it. Dead." I suggested to the sheriff that the assistant didn't have a guilty look about him. His story did. I'll explain. In the case of the distant walk, the assistant said he followed footprints up the beach. If the dead man had walked the same beach 24 hours earlier, there wouldn't have been any footprints because of the tide.
