Roger is a “rising young engineer,” who takes Mary to a nightclub and makes drunken advances to her. His scheme is foiled by the arrival of Jimmy and Roger’s indignant wife Lucy. Mary feels she has been a “stupid, cheap little fool” and has now lost Jimmy’s love as well, because she was “a reckless pickup!” |

Della realizes this is how she treated George and tracks him down: he’s the one who secretly paid for her medical treatment. Della says she’ll marry him even though he isn’t rich. |
