Comic StoryOutsider! (5 pages)
Synopsis"Okies" was another name for American gypsies; migrant workers who followed the crops. That was what the Parsons family did, and Marcy hated that life even though Jim, her friend since childhood, encouraged her to dream. Finally, it happened. Her family had scrimped and saved to the point where they could buy a house of their own, and Marcy could go to school. But there, everyone treated her like a dumb farm girl wearing odd clothes. When she decided to go to a dance, many were simply cruel to her until Fred stood up for her. He was the only one that had not looked down on her and she thought that she had finally escaped being an Okie. But then, Jim arrived to live with her family, reminding her of her roots. She ran to Fred only to find that he had no intention of marrying "a little farm girl" and taking her away. Disappointed, she returned home to find Jim, loving, comforting Jim, and realized that it is his love that will finally set her free.
