Harry is now a “rapidly-aging male going soft and paunchy, his hair receding fast.” Harry makes a pass at her and Jayne rejects him. Now freed from her “fantastic memories,” she decides to marry Paul.

However, Susie doesn’t speak to him before she gets off the train. Susie confesses to her grandmother that he might have been her “big chance” for romance. Grandma tracks down Richard and gets him to the farm on a pretext: he and Susie are reunited.
