Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood to read this oldie, but I found it kind of stupid. Mad relative, hidden treasure, fights over inheritance, mysterious figure, crooked butler...all the hoary old "mellerdrama" cliches including that the story is driven by one coincidence after another. Did ANYONE have an honest butler besides Bertie Wooster and Rip Kirby? Come to think of it, Desmond was an ex-con himself.
