| Synopsis | “Alky Alice” tells her story. Her mother “robbed [her] of self-reliance” as a child. Alice loved Frank but her mother broke them up. Alice begins drinking to handle the stress of her mother’s death from cancer. Alice continues to drink, loses her job and panhandles and steals to buy liquor. She meets Frank on the street but he doesn’t recognize her and is repulsed. Alice joins Alcoholics Anonymous and marries Frank, but relapses. Frank throws her out. The ward doctor says Alice never loved Frank: she angrily denies this. Frank has been listening and says he’ll help her battle her addiction. |
