Synopsis | “Alky Alice” tells her story. Her mother “robbed [her] of self-reliance” as a child. Alice loved Frank but her mother broke them up. Alice begins drinking to handle the stress of her mother’s death from cancer. Alice continues to drink, loses her job and panhandles and steals to buy liquor. She meets Frank on the street but he doesn’t recognize her and is repulsed. Alice joins Alcoholics Anonymous and marries Frank, but relapses. Frank throws her out. The ward doctor says Alice never loved Frank: she angrily denies this. Frank has been listening and says he’ll help her battle her addiction. |

While Warren is hospitalized, Shelly and Lee fall in love, but he feels their romance is wrong. Lee tells Shelly that Warren needs the will to live if he’s to survive his operation, so Shelly pretends to care for him. Warren recovers and tells Shelly that he doesn’t love her any more: he prefers his nurse Eve. Shelly and Lee can now be together. |
