NotesGIANT SIZE PHANTOM 19 is a reprint anthology published by Tricho (a company associated with Frew Publications) in February 1960 (estimated). This issue included a surprise: a new Catman story by John Dixon. Dixon created 12 issues of Catman for Frew, but he stopped working on this character when his newspaper strip, Air Hawk and the Flying Doctor, was made a daily strip. This extra story, which bears the title advertised for the next Catman story in Catman #12, was published two years after Catman #12.

Exactly how this story came to be is something I can't discover online. My guess would be that Dixon had planned to continue with Catman had he not been offered the opportunity to produce the 'Air Hawk and the Flying Doctor' as a daily strip (which he made a great success, as shown by its longevity). But he had named the next Catman story, and may well have started working on it. If so, having a partial Catman story he could work on in his spare time and use to generate a bonus payment from, if the daily strip didn't work. One of the mysteries of Catman publishing is that there's never been an issue 13. Did Frew know this story might still arrive, so they kept the number free? And, if so, did they forget to do it?

At the end of this story, it is said there'd be a new Catman story in the next issue. There wasn't. Giant Size Phantom #20 has Catman on the cover, but there's no Catman story inside. And Giant Size Phantom #21 has a reprint of Catman #2. To the best of my knowledge, Dixon never created any further Catman after this.

I've heard about this story, never thought I'd read it. Thanks Dan!

I understand why Phantom isn't included, but are the Australian Shadow and Planetman not public domain in Australia? If the cover reflects a team-up story inside, I really wish I could read it! But American golden age comics covers often did not reflect any team-ups that their covers might suggest, I imagine the same could be true for Australian comics.
