NotesSUPER YANK COMIC 8 by Lloyd Piper, published by Frew Publications in June 1951 (estimated). Super Yank Comics largely featured stories of Catman and of the Phantom over its 18 issues (the first issue featured reprints of American comics). This is Frew’s first Catman – after this title ended, the character was rested for five years before being completely overhauled for a new series by John Dixon. Frew had obtained permission to use the Temerson/Holyoke character concept of Cat-Man, which was updated to make it more Batman like, swapping superpowers for fisticuffs and gadgets. Cat-Man’s sidekick, Kitten, was replaced by Kit, a boy instead of a girl based on a belief that this would be better for sales. The Piper version of Catman is lighter in tone than the later Dixon version. Why Super Yank? Many Australian comics used the word ‘Yank’ by way of invoking the largely-absent American comics in the hope of gaining a competitive advantage.

This comic was already scanned on the internet. Thanks to OzMan, who drew it to my attention. It was on the AusReprints site, which generally doesn't include full stories, so this was a surprise. Uncertain who the original scanner was. The excluded Phantom story was only represented by two of the eight pages. For curious Phans, it was part one of 'The Blue Gang' from the Phantom newspaper strip in 1945.
