NotesTHE KELLY GANG RIDES was a one-shot comic published in the 1940s (no one is sure when, with dates ranging from 1940 to 1945) by L. Clapperton. It’s the only comic published by Clapperton, and features four stories, all by Lucky Doolan. There’s no information about Lucky Doolan, either. The majority of the issue is a comic about Australian bushranger and folk hero, Ned Kelly, and his gang of outlaws. The story is described as ‘a juvenile comic strip which presents a westernised version of the Kelly story and even has the Kellys dressed in 1940s style clothing’ on ironoutlaw.com (a website dedicated to Kelly and associated Kellyana. Don’t read it for historic accuracy! The remainder of the comic is the Tarzanesque THUNDER, KING OF THE GORILLA EMPIRE, and short humour stories of BLITZIE BESSIE (a cow) and DICKIE LEA (a flea). I found this uncredited scan online at the State Library of Victoria website

Ned Kelly is a figure that haunts the Australian psyche - and that haunts comics around the world. As a bushranger, the concept of Kelly and his gang in armour protecting them from bullets is easily adopted. If you look for Dead-Eye Western #11, for example, you'll fing a story of the Iron Men who are obvious Kelly look-a-likes (and I see that the Australian Panther noted this in comments on that issue). Monte Hale #58 has an armour-clad opponent called 'the Human Fort', while Straight Arrow #14's Bullet-proof Bandits wear knights' armour. Have a look, you'll find plenty!

One great comics adaptation of the Ned Kelly story was published in the 1970s as a newspaper strip. It's written and drawn by the late Monty Wedd, creator of Captain Justice (a bushranger-type character) and the Scorpion (where the villain is the dominant and successful character of the story). It was collected and published as a weighty hardcover in 2014 by Comicoz, and if you're lucky you might still find a copy for sale (it was priced at AUD $60). I see Paperscape Press claim to still have it https:paperscapepress.com.au/shop/ned-kelly-narrated-and-illustrated-by-monty-wedd And yes, I do have a copy!

“Sunbeams to Sunset” says this book was released circa 1944 whereas “Bonzer” and “AusReprints.net” say 1945.

I can't recall where, but I saw a date of c.1940. Having a quick look at sources I recall checking, Trove dates this comic as 1945 and the IronOutlaw website (for all your Ned Kelly needs) also gives that date. [Trove is a national Australian database of the collections of Australian libraries, universities, museums, galleries and archives, so Australian libraries are dating this comic as from 1945.]
