NotesCLANCY OF THE OVERFLOW 1 by Hal English (loosely based on the poem by AB ‘Banjo’ Patterson) was published by Apache Comics in November 1956 (estimated). Patterson [1864-1941] started out as a lawyer, before turning to journalism with poetry on the side. Other than ‘Clancy of the Overflow’ Patterson is best known for ‘The Man from Snowy River’ and the ballad ‘Waltzing Matilda’. The poem sees a city office worker reminiscing about a shearer he’d once known, writing him a letter to ‘Clancy of the Overflow’ (the Overflow being a station on which Clancy had once worked, years ago). It does not reach him, but someone replies ‘Clancy’s gone to Queensland droving, and we don’t know where he are’. (You can read the poem at https://www.australianculture.org/clancy-of-the-overflow-paterson/ ) The poem ponders what Clancy may be up to, and it seems the comic seeks to answer that question.
