THE LONE WOLF 5 by Keith Chatto, published by Atlas Publication in June 1951 (estimated). You could be excused for thinking Keith Chatto only created western comics – his single-feature comics are The Lone Wolf (1950-1956), The Twilight Ranger (1955-1956) and El Lobo (1956-1959) were all westerns, and he drew many covers for comics reprinting American western comics – but you’d be wrong. Chatto was the first Australian artist commissioned to illustrate a full-length Phantom story, and he wrote and drew romance comics, pirate comics, and even a detective comic aimed at mature readers (the short-lived Steven Carlisle, discontinued after 7 issues after numerous disputes with the publisher on what a comic for mature readers should contain). He later produced the comics content for a magazine based on the Aussie TV icon, Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, and took over the Air Hawk Sunday strips to assist John Dixon with the workload. Atlas Publications started their comics with Captain Atom, followed by a number of reprint titles. Keith Chatto worked for Atlas, producing original covers for the reprint titles. Wanting new comics with original characters, Atlas approached Chatto to see if he had any ideas for a new character. He pitched the Lone Wolf, and it became Atlas' second original title. Chatto had no particular experience as a writer, and it was on this title that he expanded his skill set as a comic book creator.
