NotesMAC OF THE MOUNTIES by Terry Powis was published by the NSW Bookstall Company in 1942 (estimated). With World War II underway, restrictions on importing comics (and other publications) and syndicated proofs that would allow foreign comics and comics strips to be reproduced locally. Further, no new periodicals were allowed to be registered. Local publishers struck upon the idea of publishing one-off magazines, and the NSW Bookstall Company took the lead. Terry Powis was their most prolific creators, and Mac of the Mounties is an early example of these one-off publications.

Thanks Dan, for uploading this World War II Canadian White book. Powis' artwork is decent, but lacks much detail in the characters' faces and backgrounds. Would The RCMP really have to assign the agent dealing with theft of furs from trappers in The Rocky Mountains (Alberta) from their main headquarters in Ottawa??? They didn't have anyone in Western Canada to handle it??? Somehow that seems unrealistic. Also, his flying a one-seater plane all the way from Ottawa to Alberta seems unrealistic. It appears that the author is light on knowledge of RCMP procedure and was also trying to overdramaticise the situation to give it more importance. I don't expect an Aussie to be an expert on Canadian flora, but his drawing of fir trees is somewhat weak (although passable). Still, I'd have guessed that he could have had access to photos of Canadian Rocky Mountain scenes from libraries in the major Australian cities. Also, his story's staging has a lot of people standing, and his few action scenes have mostly stiff poses, and his movements are stiff and not fluid. But, despite all that, it it is nice to have access to this rare old book.
