I learned something new from this issue. On our page 18 (mag page 19) is a picture of Harold Lloyd identified as "Winkle Lloyd." I'd never heard of such a thing...it took some digging but I finally learned that "Winkle" was a nickname given to Lloyd by British moviegoers. It derived from a character he played in his early silent comedies. It was a common nickname for Lloyd in Britain--I even found some late-teens British "Winkle" postcards. The name wasn't known in the USA, where I live. Here Lloyd was occasionally referred to as "Speedy," after another of his movie characters. Usually though he was just Harold Lloyd. One 1920s movie magazine said that French movie fans had their own national nickname for Lloyd: "Liu." I suppose that was his character's name in French versions of Lloyd films. The article didn't say.

Harold Lloyd was also known as Winkle in his weekly adventures in the British comic Film Fun, initially /instead of/ his name (/?dlid=73298 et al). Denis Gifford, a noted historian of film and British comics, touched on the Winkle thing a couple of times and he didn't have a clue where it came from either...
