The art in the Spirit story is a cut above Eisner's usual for the time. It's like he was channeling a future Frazetta, or Berni Wrightson in places. Very atmospheric and cool, rising above the plot (which I can only see through the eyes of 2018—maybe it was relatively fresh in 1940).
