DC's War Comics One-Shots

Okay, not exactly golden age per se, but close enough honestly; I suspect that many of us spent hours reading the original runs, so...last May DC announced that it was releasing a series of one shots involving some of its most famed war concepts and characters. What follows are my observations and comments.

Weird War Tales #1 -- A compilation of stories grounded in the weird, the most memorable being "Armistice Night" by Darwyn Cooke & Dave Stewart. There is something a bit amusing about seeing Confederate general Robert E. Lee and WWII U.S. general George Patton in the same tale.

G.I. Combat #1 -- Matthew Sturges & Phil Winslade present a tale that holds your interest. The best thing about story is the team up between Confederate general J.E.B. Stuart & Union general William Tecumseh Sherman.

Our Fighting Forces #1 -- The Losers (Capt. Storm, Johnny Cloud, Gunner & Sarge) is one of the best of the lot. Moore, Hardin, and Faucher, present a tale that could honestly warrant The Losers returning to a regular monthly series.

Our Army at War #1 -- Hands down, this is the best story of the lot. Mike Marts and Victor Ibanez deliver a touching war tale that bridges WWII, the Pearl Harbor attack, the 9/11 terror attacks, and the current U.S. - Afghanistan War. There is some trigger content images of 9/11, but they really cannot be avoided, so be warned in advance. This is one of the most sensitive and touching treatments of contemporary issues I have seen from a comic team, so I recommend this one with no reservations.

Star-Spangled War Stories #1 -- Do not tick off Mademoiselle Marie. Tucci, Justiniano, Derenick, and Mangum, combine their creative talents into producing a story, that in my opinion, is worthy of returning the French Heroine to a monthly series. Well done and recommended.

All of these are worth owning and reading, so check 'em out.

I saw these too on my weekly trip to my lcs. Picked up G.I. Combat and Our Army at War. Didn't pick up Our Fighting Forces 'cuz I never really cared for "The Losers", but your recommendation will probably make me pick it up on my next trip. Didn't see the others but I'll keep an eye out for them. Cheers, Bowers

My LCS said these are selling better than expected for war comics. I read and enjoyed the Losers. I enjoyed Mademoiselle Marie but felt it should have been a mini-series rather than a one shot. I had to backorder a copy of Weird War at my LCS after recommendations, hope it comes in soon.

Yeah, Mlle. Marie was one of my favorites. As for The Losers, I liked the individual characters, but just didn't care much for them as a team. Cheers, Bowers
