This is a landmark story for Captain Marvel in a way. It's the first of many stories for the next five years where Cap will be battling Axis agents and soldiers. Calling them, "Gnatzis" here isn't fooling anybody, and I doubted it fooled anybody even back then. The only thing wrong with this story is Billy Batson's brief, unnecessary blackface disguise. It's always a bit of a shock to read/watch/listen to a story from this time period that has nothing to do with race and then out from nowhere comes a blackface gag. I suppose back then, coming up with a blackface moment seemed as natural as breathing.
