Completing a run
« on: January 13, 2009, 03:36:46 AM »

Just got a copy of Adventure 247; which completes my run of the Legion of Super Heroes.  Which is the longest run I have, and probably the longest run I'll ever have.  (Depending on how you count, there aren't very many longer running titles to even try for.)  And it's enormously fun to finally have the whole series; but there's also that slightly bittersweet feeling knowing a project I've worked on for over 20 years (since I was in my teens) is finally done.

OK, I'm mostly bragging.  But this forum is one of the few places I know where they'll appreciate what I'm talking about; and it's a milestone for me.  ;D

Yes we feel with and envy you. I have a pretty good LSH run but do not think I have any pre Adv 300. I also know the dissappointment that comes with completing a series. Yes the bitter sweet is real

The longest run I had of one title was Avengers volume one (402 issues).  That took a few years and a lot of money to complete, but it was fun to do.  I also had all of volume 2 and volume three up to ... 503 or whatever issue number that was supposed to be (stupid Marvel and their renumbering stuff just to print an "Anniversary Issue").  I've dumpled a lot of the books in the last few years, mostly because I have reprints or don't see the need to hold onto books I won't read again.  My wife collected all 380 issues of the Daredevil volume one (Marvel) but she, too, is looking at getting rid of them.

That's one of the cool things about this hobby I enjoy, collecting books older than me and getting complete runs of titles.

Congrats on that! The Legion has been a favorite of mine from childhood -- you've accomplished a nice feat!

Ah, seems a number of regulars on GAC are old silverage legion cronies. Always good to see another.
My 247 is coverless but suits me fine seeing the cost of that book.
Congats on the accomplishment. Every so many years I dig them out for a reread blast to the past. Thinking I'm about due.
I came in as a preteen with issue 345 the last ish of a two part storyline marvelling at the multitude of superheroes in the book and I was hooked, chasing down all those older issues over the years. Lost me with the arrival of supergirl to the title with 381 and the subsequent rise to 15cents which offended my dignities.

Years later I regrouped and gathered the Action and Superboy runs. Then a few years back thought to sample all those following series that have appeared over the years but one or two books into them and they get put down, not even coming close to the charm of the original.

But yer not done! There's still many an ish of appearances you must find. You have the Superboy issue125 with the oneshot appearance of Kid Psycho of the Legion reserves?

Of course I have that one.  There are a few AR appearances I still need; and at least a couple books I want to upgrade.  But as far as I know I have every MAJOR guest appearance prior to around 2000.  (I haven't been bothering grabbing, say, JSA despite Starman being a member, or Countdown despite Karate Kid's involvement.  Recent DC has kept me from caring as much as I used to on the affiliated appearances.)  Probably the most notable hole I have is a lack of early Legion of Super Villains appearances, and those are only very loosely connected to the LSH itself.

I'll plug myself:  If you're a Silver Age Legion fan, you might want to go to http://Dark_Mark.tripod.com/darkmark1.htm and check out "Hellsister".  Had some good reviews on that one, and you might enjoy it.  So much for that.

Great site dark, man, you are a busy dude!

So you have Kid Psycho. I remember being entralled with FerroLad and then they went and killed him off after such a short stay. It was so great catching all those early back issues. Finding each one was like a treasure.
Moby Dick of Space, Starfinger, Triplicate Girl to Duo Damsel, SuperStalag of Space, Proty1.
What's JimShooter doing now?

Here's an interesting link for a trip to the hall of memories.
So Shooter is still penning the present Legion series? Seems I recall I broached this subject here before and am yet to pursue the readabilty of his new series. Shame on me.

I've been enjoying his run quite a bit; he only has one more issue before they cancel the latest version of the series.  He won't be writing the next version.

I need to get in to storage and check some stuff; other than about a dozen Supergirl issues I've got a complete run of Adventure from 300 to 503...

Running thru the covers on the site I listed in the other post it jogged my memory to see issue #304 with the Superman/SuperHombre logo( I believe that's what it said).

I had always considered the chance I had some sort of a foreign printing aimed at the spanish market but now it makes me wonder if all issues of 304 had that same logo in the upper left. Does your copy carry that same distinction?

The Superman/ Superhombre is on all copies of 304, yes.  Apparently there was an Ashcan with that title back in the 40's, but in general nobody seems to know what the heck that was all about.  ???

That reminded me of an old comic story. Couple decades past I was working at a shop and guy came in wanting to sell his comic collection. Can't recall the specifics but for some reason the shop didn't want the collection so I was able to pursue it.

Having called the guy and arranging to pickup the books I arrived in my van totally psyched to receive the collection with $800 burning a hole in my front pocket. He had the Adventure Supergirl run in there but I wasn't interested in that at the time as it was just considered froth on the collection of old marvels and dcs that were stashed in the long comic boxes under the bed in his extraroom.

Now in the short time it took me to get off the phone and rod my van 10-15 miles to the suburbia location, he had gotten into them and was reminiscing over them having a copy of NotBrand Echh in his hands and laughing. Then his countenance dropped and he said something to the effect of 'O man, I can't sell these books'.

At this time I heard a nerdy little voice whimper up from out of me...'You don't want to sell the books?' I was crushed and devestated all at the same time. Seeing his books again gave him the charge where he couldn't part with them after all.

Heart broken in the realization I would not be able to lay the comics down and roll on 'em while tossing them up in the air with glee while shouting 'pretty colors pretty colors' I succumbed to my fate that I'd just been thwarted out of a comic buy and went home dejected.

Wouldn't have been bad if the guy had kept his books for reading but I followed up a month later and the previous week he had sold them to someone else.

So, I almost had a SG Adv collection.  :o)
