While this sounds like a western, THE SHERIFF OF COCHISE was a contemporary police drama set in Cochise County, AZ. Stories seemed to be strangely similar to HIGHWAY PATROL, emphasizing fistfights and car chases rather than gunplay. Tough Sheriff Frank Morgan was eventually promoted to U.S. Marshall and given the entire state of Arizona to keep under control (the series title would subsequently change to U.S. MARSHAL and remain in syndication until 1960). Singer Stan Jones was the series creator but departed the show in 1958. A total of 156 episodes were produced under both titles

156 Episodes - and I have never heard of it?
Amazing!
Also curious that if, 'Stories seemed to be strangely similar to HIGHWAY PATROL' T.V. Stories also has episodes of Highway Patrol. Surprising that there was never a US Highway Patrol comic, as far as I know.

I have only vague memories of watching Sheriff of Cochise. On the other hand Highway Patrol was a big favorite. When I was drawing Captain Comet for DC's Secret Origins and needed a 1950s cop I drew Broderick Crawford as a tip of the hat to the show. Episodes of both series are on YouTube.
