The Black Hood and Green Lama both started in the pulps and ported over to comics in 1940, but I don't know if pulps count as novels.  How long were those stories?

Well, some say the pulps were like a novel a month.

Pulps were like comics in that they contained several stories under one title. They usually kept them along the same lines, like all sci-fi or detective stories. I guess to quantify things you'd have to assign a definition to what you mean by novel. This is from dictionary.com ;

I guess you need to clarify your questions, Denny. Are you talking about entire comic books or just stories, serialized or otherwise, within a comic book? As Ed notes, The Count of Monte Cristo (and The Hunchback of Notre Dame) started being serialized in Jumbo #1 (Sept. 1938). Perhaps some earlier Centaurs or DCs had earlier adaptations. Anyone know?
