The Expanse

I'm a bit late to the party here as this show is five seasons in already. The Expanse is essentially space-age science fiction and political espionage rolled into one tightly-knit, superbly-scripted and excellently-acted package.

The short synopsis is that in the future, humans have colonised Mars and the asteroid belt. Each sector has developed its own economy, culture and politics. Mars is rich and advanced, the 'belters' are poor, ill-treated and resentful, Earth is trying hard to keep on top but concerned about the growing threat of Mars.

An act of sabotage triggers a series of events that in turn set of a set of linked but usually separate story lines that include a space crew caught up in the middle of a huge interplanetary conflict, suspected terrorists evading galactic diplomats and a crooked cop looking to make an honest case of a missing person.

This show is sci-fi for grown-ups. It's dark, deep, plausible and without clear "good and bad guys" allowing the viewer to decide whom they sympathize with. Recommended.

I have the first two seasons. The Expanse is based on a series of books written by  James S. A. Corey.
I'll be honest, I've found it hard going. It's quite dense. Star Wars or Trek its definitely not.
I'll have to put aside some time and go back to it. It's certainly brain fodder.

Cheers!

This sounds right up my street - although I take on board Panther's comments.

Because I worked abroad for many years, I'm way behind in watching TV series - I've just finished watching Firefly (which I adored - I'm now a fanboy of the series) about two decades behind the rest of the world - and I've just started watching Jessica Jones (intrigued after episode 2 - but not yet sold)

The Expanse is definitely on my list of things to watch - I'll get there eventually

The Expanse is one of those shows you have to be alert with right from the beginning. For everything to make sense, every plot needs to be kept in mind. Also, because it's complex, the first two or three episodes are just laying out the characters and situations. Things start to get moving around episode three.  It's well worth the effort though.

Jessica Jones was not at all bad though not a patch on Daredevil. Sadly each Netflix Marvel series was weaker than the one before it. I'm still excited to see what they do with the Millarverse though.

A friend recommended the Expanse so I have it on my list to watch. Not sure I want to watch something requiring a lot of thought. The older I get the more fluffy I like my viewing. I gave up on Jessica Jones after the first couple of episodes but went back at recommendation and glad I did. Enjoyed the first two seasons a lot and have not watched three yet
