The Paul Dallas (1927) series with the Greyfriars heroes is a fine example of Frank Richards writing ability when it comes to characterisation and creating an old public school atmosphere.
The efforts of Vernon-Smith, the Bounder, to heap wrongdoings upon the innocent head of the 'interloper' as Vernon-Smith saw Paul, was probably a bit over the top but all came out right in the end.
Hamilton had a way with words that seemingly flowed from his pen or should I say, his typewriter. He wasted no time on unnecessary external facts but got straight on with the story that made the reader feel he was in there as part of the unfolding events and could almost join in with the author's fine schoolboy characters. I enjoyed this series immensely.
