Hey everybody! This site is a dream come true for me. As a long time comics reader and illustration lover I've only recently gotten the itch to dig deep into the non superhero golden age stuff. There's a treasure trove there and this site allows me to read stuff I'd never, ever known existed let alone own. Thanks!

PS, I'm in the market for a good scanner so I can upload some cool stuff also. I'm REALLY concerned with quality and don't need any bells and whistles. Just the best reproduction possible. I also want to enlarge as high as possible. Iv'e got one thousand dollars to spend on this thing. Any suggestions from the experts? Thanks again- C.D.

Carl-Do you have books you are planning to scan for the site?
A friend got me wondering if there might be a scanner available somewhere designed specifically for magazine, comics or large document scanning. Seems that would be the ticket. For a thousand bucks you should be able to get a sweet machine.

I don't do much scanning myself (yet--I do have a pile of books that's starting to bug me), but two things come to mind, especially at your price point.  The first possibility is to go with anything that has a large scanning bed.  The bigger the space, the less you have to shift the pages around.

A similar alternative would be a sheet-feeding scanner, which has the same benefits and might run faster, but sounds like a potential danger as the grippy rubber wheels push your fragile pages passed the camera.

Otherwise, I suspect the machines are all interchangeable.  The motors and gears are probably more fragile in lightweight or slimline models (mine sometimes slips when resetting for the next scan until it warms up, which is annoying), and anything not dirt-cheap presumably doesn't suffer from the "6MP Limit" that small digital cameras hit (http://6mpixel.org), so I would think you just want the biggest, heaviest model you can find.

But that's a VERY theoretical suggestion, and you probably want empirical data to back that up before pulling out the plastic.

Hi Carl,
I would NOT recommend the HP Scanjet 4370.  Scanning at 300dpi takes forever!
A larger flatbed scanner is a plus.  I haven't heard of any scanners that were specifically designed for comics or magazines.

Please be sure to check here before scanning any books.  We might already have a scan though some scan could do with a rescan so if you see one of your books here online please check the existing scans and see if your own copy was say in better shape or something.

Looks like I'm gonna go with the Epson perfection V700. It has great reviews everywhere I look. Standard bed size though.
If I go with this I've still got about 500 bucks left in my budget. Any recommndations for a extra large bed scanner? Thanks, all!
