One that got away
« on: October 18, 2008, 09:05:00 PM »

Went to a country auction today out in the sticks. Piles of stuff. Rows of boxes sitting on the lawn. I get to meandering around when a bit of color catches my eye in one of the boxes.

Man, it angers me somewhat rehashing this but I'll write it for the entertainment value.

So upon closer inspection what I think at first is a Sunday's Comics Section from a newspaper in a loose fitting plastic bag  placed in a box alongside various books and knicknacks

is a large Charlie Chaplin booklet from 1917 Funny Stunts as listed in the Overstreet.

I'm thinking what a chore it will be to scan this oversize but was up for the challenge and place it back with the plan of bidding when the box came up. Would have been peanuts and I didn't know the value of a good copy.

Bit of time goes by with the boxes and stuff being bought to the tables up front for display before the  auctioneer but then the format changes and they decide to walk to the boxes and bid choice from the row. (you auction folk know what I'm talking about. High bid gets the choice of one box or up to all in a designated row, then the remaining boxes in the row are auctioned again and again until none are left then they move to the next row).

So now I'm searching high and low for the book and it's gone! Found the box it was in and the friggin' CharlieChaplin comic was missing. Went over and over the rows and it was nada.

I figure someone knew what it was, saw me checking it out and you know the rest.

Just a true fishing story to tell you all of the Saturday on this side of the globe.

The End.
