Femforce #150 - New issue from AC Comics (featuring my work!)
« on: September 30, 2009, 01:13:21 AM »

For those who don't know, I'm a contributing writer to AC Comics' Femforce series. I have a backup feature called "Rowena" about a gentle giantess in a slightly skewed medieval fantasy world.

I wanted to spread the word that Femforce #150 is now available. This is a major milestone for the series, making it the longest running all-female superhero team book (it's been published since the 1980s). If you aren't familiar with it, Femforce is a series that would appeal to Golden Age fans. Many of its characters are revived Golden Age heroes (Miss Victory) or inspired by Golden Age heroes (She-Cat and Nightveil are based on the original Black Cat and the Fox Comics version of Phantom Lady). The series is drawn in a classic "good girl art" style. This issue the book switches to a new double-length graphic novel format for a battle between the Femforce, an army of AC heroes (many with ties to the Golden Age as well), and the Lovecraftian Old Dark Ones.

The other half of the book is AC's campy and fun sci-fi/fantasy/giant women series, Gargantarama (Strong, powerful women are AC's bread and butter, which led to giantess heroines becoming popular at the company). There are 14 pages of my Rowena series, focusing on her wedding her tiny human love, Cedric, which doesn't sit well with her gigantic (and in some cases maneating) relatives! Gargantarama also features Rock Baker's World War II era heroine, Dinosaur Girl, another feature that will appeal to Golden Age fans.

I'm quite thrilled to be part of such a historic issue so I hope people will check it out!

And once again I send my endorsement and suggest that all that can support one of the most GA like books with lots of great reading and good girl art for good measures.

I looked at some of the covers and looks pretty good artwork. Good to see GA art inspired comic books out there, I will post some of mine soon. I'm working on a graphic novel that is inspired by some GA sci-fi stuff. It's going pretty slow but I felt the need to research a lot about GA comics which opened my eyes for new meanings to my story.

Congratulations for the #150 issue Rajah, I know it's not easy to keep in the field for that long!

Nice! I like the comic, though I wish there were some with more modest costumes for us women [similar to what the males wear]. Just a thought.

But then many of us lowly males would be less likely to buy it. We are an easy bunch to figure out what we like. Femforce is not half as bad as all the thong clad heroines that some are putting out. Rowena is not skimpily clad. Be sure to tell your local comic shop to order Femforce 150 for you. We need to support a GA feel comic and one of our own. You may find you want to go back and order some from the past. At least as far back as Gargantarama goes. I do highly recommend Rowena.

Hi folks,

Rajah inspired me to share (I hope it's alright to post this here) with you one of my first GA art inspired cover for our local indie comics magazine. At the time I was really curious about pulp magazines and sci-fi comic books but at that time I didn't have much access to all this we are finding now. So I did this cover and inside I did this story about the cure for death, it is discussed by some scientists and then we have a show on tv with the only guy to reach 1000 years old...very exagerated and funny. Here is the cover:

The story inside this issue is 7 pages long and now I'm trying to do one bigger now about 30 pages.

I found this a few weeks ago, the resemblance is incredible and makes me think perhaps there is really a collective unconscious!

Yes, I understand the concern. As much as I appreciate the cheesecake elements of AC's characters as a guy, I'm also sometimes uncomfortable with them. The Rowena stories are the first things I've gotten published so I've shown the issues to all my friends and family (including a few conservative relatives!). The skimpy outfits and eye-popping figures make those situations a little awkward. I get reactions like "My, she's quite a, um, big girl." And they're not just talking about her height. ;)

That said, I think AC's cheekecakey art is fairly harmless. It's not as over-the-top as some characters (Vampirella and Jim Balent's Tarot come to mind). And AC's characters are all strong, independent women who don't need a male hero to save them. I think that's a positive thing. At the end of the day, comic book characters are usually beautiful people and their designs call attention to that. Whether it's Rowena's plunging neckline or Spider-Man's skintight body stocking, it's something that's become a part of the medium, for better or worse. I understand if you dislike it though, Dannistories.

Oldcharacter, congrats on your story. That's a pretty cool cover. Maybe you should have given your book its own thread to call attention to it. We seem to have a few different forum members getting their work out there.

Thanks for the comment Rajah. I'm still learning the local routines and forum rules, reading more than posting.  :-X
