DCM - not quite a mirror site
« on: September 18, 2010, 03:54:18 AM »

Yesterday, September 16, 2010, I could not access this site.  So I thought I would just log on to the mirror site Digital Comic Museum.  When I initially checked out DCM shortly after hearing about it here on GAC, it appeared to be essentially the same site with exactly the same books available for download.  (a totally mirror site)

I thought that if you uploaded a book to either site that it would be available on both sites, etc.   But this not the case, although when initially launched DMC appeared to have all the books available on GAC - since then the content has not been mirrored.  It now appears that if you want a book available on both sites that you have to upload it separately to each site.

This also means that I am going to have to periodically visit both sites if I want to see what is available for download or to read their messageboards.

Deni,

There is a convoluted history to it, but essentially, no. The two sites are NOT mirrors. DCM was founded by former members from GAC, and the two sites membership rosters would probably have 80% matches.

How it got this way is not as important as the fact that both exist and benefit each other by virtue of sharing the task of distributing this stuff to the public. Both are non-profit sites, and each has had issues in the past when, periodically, the sheer volume of stuff flying out the doors will bring the site to its knees (this is why we INSIST on no simultaneous downloading, and ask that you only download in one session what you intend to read for the day).  In these instances, the redundancy of the sites is a tremendous comfort.

You will see variations in what each site carries, based on management styles. We both try to make sure that everything we offer is legitimately Public Domain and legal, but that is tricky business and subject to interpretation.

So, if you post (thank you and God bless you), do post to both sites.

I visit both sites regularly. The message boards are where the community is built. There will be different discussions going on here and that that I have an interest in.

Well, I've never heard of DCM but it sounds pretty neat.

I did find a site that had a lot of Fawcett Comics for download and I'll see if I can post a link when I get home. I forgot the name of the site but it was basically "Free Golden Age Comics . Com" or something. They focused a lot on Captain Marvel and the Marvel family and didn't nearly have the selection one would find here. I don't even think they had any issues that GAC didn't have (or I would have posted them). But if your a Capatain Marvel family fan then you could download some there and not worry about crashing GAC ...

I think you're talking about this one http://www.comicbooksarchive.com/catalog_1.php
It seems to have a bunch of Fawcett and Quality titles but no other publishers. I used the site a bit when this site was having all the problems.
