Adventures Into The Unknown 013

Just finished reading it the other day and noticed the first story "The Vampire Swoops" the page numbers were out of order.
I have corrected them and uploaded the file.

Hopefully one of our kind administrators can sort it out.

Done, Graeme.
Onwards and upwards?  You've been listening to Gardeners Question Time, perhaps?
Good work.

The Magnet

Completed uploading issues 256 - 307 for the year 1913.

Had some problems with uploading - traced to a faulty USB socket - now corrected.

So I will now try to at least upload a complete year (52 Issues) a week for the future.

The Magnet

Just completed uploading all the issues for 1914 (308-359).

Just a quick query - is there any method of uploading in bulk?

I can download and convert a year's issues in about 75 to 90 minutes. However the uploading does take considerably longer at an issue a time. Any advice gratefully accepted.

Thanks Graeme.  All going up now.
I'll leave Mark to answer the other bit.  I don't really understand how it all works - I just use it.

Thanks Paw/Narfstar

Mark has set me up to use FTP.
He guided me through the first perilous stages (what a fine chap) but now am up and running and a test batch has worked fine, so I will crack on now with the rest.

The Magnet

Now uploaded year 1915 (issues 360-411) by FTP.

Please note that the lack of colour from issue 396 onwards was due to a shortage of the red Aniline dye during the 1st world war, so issue 395 was the last of the famous red covers.
The use of B&W or alternatively blue-tinted covers continued after the war until 1922 (with the exception of the holiday editions). Issue 770 saw the introduction of full colour covers, plus a 100% price hike from 1d to 2d.

Thanks as well ... they are now all getting chewed up by the machine and will be appearing soon! We must do a bit of a write up about the series.

That's an interesting idea.  There are a few really bad quality Bunter t.v. clips on youtube.  If you click over to Friardale there are links to a lot of Magnet and Bunter history, e.g.
http://www.friardale.co.uk/Television%20and%20Radio/Television%20and%20Radio.htm

Billy Bunter (and his sister Bessie) were reprinted in Netherlands as Billy Turf and of course, Bunter not only was in The Magnet as prose stories he had piles of comic strips, some of which are on CB+

Magnet History

As Paw says there a few interesting articles about The Magnet on the Friardale site, which I can easily upload to CB+.

I am away today for a long weekend, (well deserved break) back next Wednesday, so will resume activities then.

The Magnet

Back from my break and uploaded year 1916 (Issues 412-464) to FTP.

From issue 427 the pages were reduced from 28 pages to 24 pages.
There is an extra issue in this year (53 in total). I think it is something to do with the issue dates 412 issued on 1st January & 464 issued on 30th December.
Another curious point in this batch that I noticed is there are a few hair/beauty products being advertised in what is primarily a boy's paper, but in some of the issues they print a reader's gallery and there more than a few girls listed as readers (see back page of issue 436) so maybe they were catering for all.
The quality on some of these scans are not great, but I suppose it all depends on what material the original scanners had to work with.
