Meet Merton artists
« on: December 04, 2008, 04:57:32 AM »

Hi Guys,
I was enjoying the complete run of Toby's Archie knock-off 'Meet Merton' today.
Boy, that Dave Berg could sure pull off a nice DeCarlo GGA style!
But the one that caught my eye most was 'Peggy Dean' in issues #2 and 3 done in a completely different, almost Neil Adams realistic style though the women's faces are all wrong.

Anyways, does anyone know who the artist was for Peggy Dean?

Only the cover and the third Merton story are by Berg, Yoc,
I don't know who is doing the first two Merton stories. The Peggy Dean story in issue #2 is by Jack Sparling.

I didn't look at #3.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

ps. is there any way to view the files WITHOUT downloading them?

Hi Jim,
I wish there WAS a way to read without downloading but nope, there isn't.
Thanks for the Sparling credit for Peggy Dean.  If one ignores the faces his artwork is great!
Berg does all of Merton #1 (signed) and Heritage has Berg original art for the cover of Merton #3 and the 3rd story of Merton #2.  Berg signed the second and forth stories in Merton #4.
------
I passed along your phone # to that west coast scanner I was telling you about before your trip.  I told him you might not be interested in adding more scanners but he still loves to talk comics and artists so I'm sure you'll have fun talking one day.

Jim, I'll repeat my offer.  If you want scans of GAC comics, I'd be happy to burn you one or more CDs and mail them to you when I return your comics.  A CD will hold about 30 (52) Golden Age comics.

It's a very kind and generous offer, Jon,
but I don't really save the files I download from the site. I use them to either review what you scanners are doing or to answer a question that I might have. I don't save the files to disc, I just look at them once and discard them. I have the books and I don't keep them in plastic bags, so it's very easy for me to revisit a book when the need arises.

Thanks again for the offer, but I don't use the site to "gain" comics, but just to occasionally look at one to learn something. And that's pretty much how I view my collection, too.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

Hi Jim,
While I even hate to entertain the thought there might be one or two good reasons to take up Jon on his offer.
Sadly internet sites have been known to one day suddenly be gone.  Or all their files are lost in a server crash.  The later has already happened to us once last March and it took us months to sort out the files again.  We actually haven't completely recovered from it as we still are finding the odd book here and there are broken links.
So I'd suggest to everyone - if there are scans you really want to have for keeps - please download and burn a copy for yourself.  Nothing lasts forever in the world and GAC isn't immune to these forces.

That said I admire Jim's ability to keep his collection to realistic proportions unlike my own.  Perhaps if I were surrounded by the real thing these scans might not hold so much power over me!   :-\ ;)

Take care,
-Yoc

If you're talking about my collection of scans, Yoc, I don't have one and probably never will. If you're talking about my collection of comics, you have a wicked sense of humor.

Should something unmentionable happen to GAC, then I would bemoan the loss of a reference site, but I really don't save the scans and have recorded the information that I've gleaned from the books I've reviewed.  Space has NEVER been a problem, guys. My home network has over 4 Terabytes of storage hanging off of it, not to mention DVD writers and even a 2 GB Zip drive for legacy backups. There's no shortage of space, just a lack of need.

For me, comics are for research and the information is for sharing. Once gleaned, the books are reference, but not often referred to. People occasionally ask me if I have fire insurance and are amazed when I say no. I simply tell them that if everything went up in flames I'd just shed a few tears and walk away. There is no way to recapture what I have and I don't have the energy to even attempt it even if I had unlimited funds. I have THREE laws in life:

Jim's Law #1: Nothing is Easy
Jim's Law #2: Everything Almost Works
Jim's Law #3: The Past is Over

I believe them implicitly.

Recognizing the third law is often the key to happiness in life.

One thing is for sure Jim, we ALL here should be thankful that you're generosity will mean that your scanned books should live long after we are all gone and for today's and future readers/scholars we sincerely thank-you.  :)
