I surmise that perhaps a competitor like DYNAMITE may have been sniffing around the Marvelman franchise (which has a host of interesting characters) and MARVEL jumped on it before they had a potential nightmare on their hands.   

I am one of those who include Marvelman under a Golden Age tent merely for his connections to Captain Marvel.

Sadly, I have no faith that Marvel will do the character justice. I can't wait for his first X-Men team up.

There is an element of uncomfortable truth to what you are saying.   

I predict a lame "epic introduction" of Marvelman into the Marvel Universe, followed by a failed series, then a number of regular guest appearances or membership in whatever the "post-Dark Avengers" Avengers team will be in 3 years or so after all of the Civil War plot lines have finally been put to bed.

I can also see them attempting to fit him into Cold War Captain American-Human Torch-Agents of Atlas-3D Man scheme -- the possibilities for MARVEL to ruin Marvelman are endless!

I doubt Dynamite (or anybody else) had anything to do with it, the Marvelman/ Miracleman rights were (and are) an insane mess.  I suspect what Marvel really wants is the rights to the Moore/ Gaiman works, but the only way to those are through the Mick Angleo rights.  Marvel was just the only group with the money and willingness to start cutting through the mess.

I'm pretty sure that Gaiman is willing to work with Marvel on this one, and Buckingham showing up at the panel suggests he is as well.  If I recall correctly, the major stopping points right now were a) Nobody working on the 80's version actually had rights to the character, and b) some of the artists working with Moore didn't want their stuff reused.  I suspect we'll see a reprint/ continuation of the Gaiman material fairly quickly; sorting out the Moore issues may take longer.  (It honestly wouldn't surprise me if we see some of the Moore material redrawn; and to be honest Book Two might be better off if it was.)

I'm not sure how to really take people when they talk about not having faith with Marvel in regards to Marvel Man and their treating him right. He started off as a Captain Marvel clone and what Moore had done to Marvel Man would have most up in arms if it was done to Captain Marvel (save for those that either pray at the altar of saint Moore or think Billy should grow up). In fact, a lot of what most complain about DC is that they treat their mainstream characters like or worse than Moore would have if editorial had let him have his way some 20 years ago with the Charlton characters and his Twilight proposal. Why should I really care how Marvel treats the character as it's bound to be with as almost respect and faithfulness that Moore treated the character as it came to him? Would hard to be less. Personally, I'd love to see the character revert back to being a fun loving more innocent character, let him be a reflection at how twisted the original has become at DC. But, I can easily see the grim and cynical version of the character fitting in pretty well at what Marvel has become. Although with Marvel Man, I wonder if there is room for Captain Britain...

Wish I could get into Agents of Atlas. It's one of those cases are that all I see are flaws from the horrible final issue of the mini, to all the revisions to make the characters duller and more mundane, to their basically feeding bad guys to their dragon partner.

I have to agree with Ed, here.  What people gripe about at DC and Marvel pretty much STARTED with Moore, and there was a time (1983-1987 or so) when he nearly rearchitected the entire DC Universe in his depressing image, and fans couldn't wait.

Besides the Charlton version of "Watchmen" and "Twilight," he was also slated to work closely with John Byrne and Marv Wolfman on the Superman reboot (which was obnoxious enough without Moore's help as it was), and probably other projects.

But basically, yeah, I don't know what of Marvelman deserves to be "respected" so much.  He's a deconstructed adaptation of a trademark-skirting ripoff.  It'd be like worrying that somebody was going to adapt "Superfolks" as a grim and gritty go-nowhere deconstruction.
