Reading Group Numbers
« on: June 21, 2019, 01:41:16 AM »

Not sure if this is the best spot for this. I considered putting it in the Reading Group, but I thought it might get lost amongst all the reading choices there. If a Mod has a better place for this, please move, thanks and apologies for giving you work to do.

Anyway in 200 weeks we've had 210 comics (17 comics were in 8 comparisons, which is why there are more books than weeks).

The main reason for this was to see what kinds of books we're reading a lot of and which we're neglecting. Oddly enough this is the weakest stats I have because some stories are so weird I wasn't sure what genre they were and other stories are actually multi-genre. For now I picked the main genre to list it, so Funny Animals are stuffed into Humor, Canteen Kate was more funny than War so it's under Humor, etc.

If someone wants a copy of my spreadsheet send me a private message with your email. It's in Open Office so let me know if you need it saved in a different format.

Thanks for doing this Scrounge. My first thought was that we have looked at a wide range of books. And that is a good thing. I like the choices MovieLover is making at present.
One thought, it might be interesting to have a foreign language comic for once. Most of us probably couldn't read the dialogue without help, but the pictures tell a lot of the story. Two possible advantages. First, to give wide exposure to something good and second, maybe some of our non-english readers might be encouraged to join in.
Just a thought.

Or a pantomime foreign language story, if one exists, could be good.

Interesting statistics.  I'll have to be disciplined to avoid beefing up the Funny Animal, Humour, and Science and Science Fiction categories too much, at the expense of other categories.

well, maybe you could look at the foreign section,  particularly the European section, and nominate a funny animal title from that source.

Or a funny animal PSA.  ;)

Actually I think I saw a Walt Kelly offering in the Pamphlets and Giveaways section. Haven't read it so don't know if it's good or bad, but there might be some interesting curiosities hidden in that area.

The Walt Kelly entry in The Pamphlets and Public Service Giveaways Section is a P.S. giveaway educational pamphlet, starring Pogo and Tammananny Tiger from the Pogo Newspaper Strip, spreading the message to teenagers that they should stay in school, and stay occupied in productive, positive activities, like taking on an afterschool job.  Or, if they are forced to leave school, they should take advantage of The US Youth Corps programmes, which can find them work to keep them occupied with positive activities (rather than the implied being lazy, which often leads to falling into negative activities, including committing crimes and taking illegal drugs and becoming addicted.

As far as giveaway comic books are concerned, my choosing an issue of Kelly's "Peter Wheat" might be more interesting for Group member readers.
