GCD Timeline
« on: October 12, 2020, 12:53:11 AM »

Jjust noticed that GCD currently publishes and (I hope) regularly updates a timeline for comic creator bdays.

https://www.comics.org/

Thought this might be a good thread for discussion of those individuals that might be of interest on CB+

Currently there are two.

Quote
Paul Cassidy (b. 1910)
1910 October 11 - 2005 May 15
In addition to ghosting for Joe Shuster on Superman, Cassidy engaged in post-graduate academic work on comics. His master's thesis, "An Approach to the Profession of Comic Strip Cartooning Based upon an Analytical Survey of Current Trends and Personal Experiences," was done at the University of Wisconsin in 1942 as part of a master's degree in art education.

Quote
Steve Muffatti (b. 1910)
1910 October 10 - 1968 month? day?
Animator and comic artist, mainly at Harvey Comics.

Steve Muffatti? Who he?

https://www.lambiek.net/artists/m/mufatti_steve.htm

"Steve Muffatti was an animator and comic book artist. He was a successful animator with Fleischer on 'Superman' cartoons. He later worked for Paramount's Famous Cartoon Studios where he was an animator on such cartoon series as 'Popeye' (based on E.C. Segar's comics character), 'Casper the Friendly Ghost', and 'Little Lulu' (based on the comics character created by Marge)."
So if you have seen those great Superman animations and the Popeye ones, you have been enriched by his work.
At Harvey, According to GCD,  mostly the staff Artist on Little Audrey and Little Dot.
Here is a much more detailed article on Steve

Created Richie Rich? Well, nobody's perfect! ???

Added bonus - That page has a black and white Conan illo by my main man, Alex Toth! 8)

And here's Steves IMDB page,
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0611157/
Hmm. 13 episodes of the Felix the Cat TV show. I remember that.
Incidently Felix is technically Australian. ;D
Quote
Felix was the first animated character to attain a level of popularity sufficient to draw movie audiences.
Felix originated from the studio of Australian cartoonist/film entrepreneur Pat Sullivan. Either Sullivan himself or his lead animator, American Otto Messmer, created the character. What is certain is that Felix emerged from Sullivan's studio, and cartoons featuring the character enjoyed success and popularity in popular culture. Aside from the animated shorts, Felix starred in a comic strip (drawn by Sullivan, Messmer and later Joe Oriolo) beginning in 1923,

Please check the link regularly and post about anybody who you think may be of relevance to CB+.
Cheers!

And, first Messmer, then Oriolo, then Muffatti drew The classic comic book Felix, first for Western/Dell, Then Toby Press (Australian connection), and finally for Harvey, respectively.

Joe Simon did a few things that are up here. Blue Bolt, some romance comics, usually with a guy named Kirby. I think he also created a character Marvel published, but who's interested in that?  ;)

Steve Muffatti? Who he?

The IMDb page list a birthdate of October 4, 1880. I believe this to be incorrect.

Steve Muffatti or Stephen Muffatti?
THIS Steve Muffatti had a bonafide Social Security registration and IT shows his birth date as Oct. 4, 1880 (one year older than his draft registration) and death date of Jan. 1968. Whereas the OTHER one (Stephen Muffatti, c1910 - Unknown) APPEARS to have NEVER registered for Social Security, and so we have no specific birth or death date for him.

Gleaned from the Internet:

Re: Stephen Muffatti, the animator.

One of his nephews (Todd Muffatti) was a fairly famous stage-set designer. Soooo anywho, Steve Muffatti was born in Oct. 1909 and evidently died sometime before 1977. Somebody go change Imdb and whatever else!! (IFFFF his obituary ever shows up then the Turtle will be tickled).

We commemorate today Maurice Dodd - his 98th birthday, though he left us in 2005.

The Perishers were a staple diet of my childhood and even today, we all clunk-click-every trip

That is for super-wealthy starving poor people, who can afford better than free catsup and liquid mustard sandwiches filched from outdoor restaurant tables.   8)

Happy Birthday to a true comic genius - Leo Baxendale.

Leo left us in 2017 aged eighty-six. He was responsible for one of the great comic creations - the Bash Street Kids and much more besides:
