Psychedelic Comics
« on: March 20, 2010, 06:05:50 AM »

Just started reading Steranko's Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD.

Must say, excellent artwork.. even the covers are quite trippy..

Any more comics that have similar trippy artwork.

Steve Ditko's run on Dr. Strange.  Like doing acid while eating mushrooms!

Trippiest stuff on GAC had to be "Stardust the Super Wizard" in the Fox section's "Fantastic Comics."

I remember when I'd have 10.50mb left and I'd find a book I wanted that was like 10.6mb. Don't worry, keep posting and you'll get more!

It's Silver Age, but for me the trippiest psychedelic comics were the 60's Teen Titans run. Since they were teens in the 60's, the language used in the writing was hip and there were villains you'd only find in 60's comics, like the Mad Mod. You can't beat the Nick ardy art either. There were some Aquaman fro the same time period with really psychedelic covers and Nick Cardy art inside too. The Titans run is among my all time favorites of any comics.

Steranko's run on Nick Fury in Strange Tales is great too, particularly near the end just before Fury got his own book.

Just got back home and read the Madhouse #4. Considering the cover, I was a little surprised to see that the first story in the book was Western themed (but quite funny). The second story was more in the vein of what the cover was indicative of... very trippy story of some teenage "Bop-Kats" who buy a haunted house and end up haunting the ghouls instead of the other way around. Cool read... thanks for pointing me to a book that I might otherwise not have even looked at. :)

Yes, Mad Mod was in issues 7 and 17.

Issue 14 has a trippy classic cover of Robin in a graveyard with ghosts of the other Titans surrounding him.

My favorites in this run are later in the 30's (issues, not year) when the book took a definite turn in the direction of horror. In particular issue 38 has a trippy cover of the Titans walking through the door of a drugstore where their being attacked by ripply doppelgangers of themselves. The book opens with Lilith dancing to the Doors in cut offs and a tight shirt. Issues 35 through 39 are 52 page 25 cent issues with short back-up stories (sort of like Golden Age did), some new and some reprints of early silver-age appearances of individual Titans.

I picked up some of the 25 cent issues at a flee market when I was a kid and #41 in a spinner rack at a bait and tackle shop on vacation. They were and still are some of my favorite comics. You just took me on a trip down memory lane when I pulled them out. I'd totally forgotten I got some of them signed by Nick Cardy a couple of years ago at NY Comic Con.

What will it be, their wacky adventures in a home? Chronologically I don't think they're old mind you, but they ravaged their bodies with hard living. And drugs don't forget all the drugs.

Considering their age, they still appear to be relativley well preserved. Maybe due to all the drugs? Hhmmm... something to ponder upon...
