Humphrey was very popular back in his day.
The strip was Joe Palooka, Humphrey was a minor character in the strip but towards the end of it's time Humphrey pretty much took over the strip. 
Ham Fisher's was quite a tragic story

Thanks for the link. As far as I could see, this comic was never published in Germany. There are a lot of numbers of 'Joe Palooka' comics on CB+ and although I am not interested in sports (and certainly not in boxing :o), but I like Ham Fisher's drawing style, so I'll take a look at the comics. :)
