Meanwhile, I've been struggling to decide all day who my favourite Doctor is - a tough choice between Tom Baker, Peter Davidson and David Tennant for me.

And what about the best three assistants? So many to choose from and so little time to think about it as I struggle to meet my wife's totally unreasonable, some might even say manic, expectations for finishing the re-decoration of our living room.

Well, the Daleks postdate the Golden Age by more than a few years.

So I'm thinking, are there any pre-Dalek evil robots that stand out in the golden age?

My Favourite Dalek story, and that of many more, is the single episode 'Dalek' from the Ninth Doctor series one.
That episode is some kind of masterpiece. For several reasons.

My Favourite Doctor was and is, Patrick Troughton, the second Doctor. 
He was the one who gave Dr Who some of his lasting idiosyncrasies.

Okay, here's a poser - who is your favourite Robot of all time? For me, it has to be the one in the original TV series of Lost in Space (name escapes me) - but I'm also fond of the one in Fantastic Planet.

The Daleks are not robots, there is a living creature inside what is essentially a tank.

The Cybermen started off as cyborgs replacing more and more of their humanity essentially becoming robots.

DC's two Robotman heroes would technically be cyborgs as they had human brains.

The great question, favourite Doctor?  Well, once again, Panther has shown himself someone of exceptional taste - mainly 'cos he picked Patrick Troughton, who is my favourite doctor.  That's despite my having watched Doctor Who right from the start, so Hartnell was my first doctor.  But it was shortly into Troughton's run that I realised, this was the real Doctor for me.  I haven't changed my mind.  Others run close and David Tennant and Peter Davison are up there for me. Although I'm not a great Tom Baker fan, I think some of his stories are among the best Who tales: Pyramids of Mars; Fang Rock; Weng Chiang.
As the audios are now considered part of the pantheon, Sylvester McCoy's Doctor has to be considered, as he radiates a bit of menace, is manipulative, and dangerous, imo.

Robots, Probably because many of you aren't familiar with it, I'd like to mention Mytek the Mighty from Valiant. Just shows my love for giant monsters.  I've always liked Robby the Robot.

The Sci Fi film I never get tired of.
I was lucky enough to find a near mint condition copy of the original simultaneous publication of hard back novel. The release of the book was held back until after the film was made.
I still have this book wrapped in plastic.

There are some differences between book and film. I'm planning to re-read it and make a list.

How about the Cybernauts in The Avengers

The Cybernaut was a scary killing machine, but aside from that there was no personality to it.

I always found it odd that Philip Levene, who created the Cybernauts, never actually wrote for Doctor Who, although one of his concepts, the Man-Eater of Surrey Green, was used as inspiration for the Dr. Who story, The Seeds of Doom.

Definition: Mirriam Webster:- 

a machine that resembles a living creature in being capable of moving independently (as by walking or rolling on wheels) and performing complex actions (such as grasping and moving objects) 

and

such a machine built to resemble a human being or animal in appearance and behavior 

So a Robot is definitely a machine.
So yes, the Metal Men.
Those machines Magnus used to fight.
Is 'the silver age Vision' a Robot? He is an artificial man, but they use the term 'Synthazoid'
The Marvel Villain, ULtron is a Robot.
I think the Silver age 'Red Tornado' is a Robot.
The Doom Patrol's Robotman, in fact, is not.
The Golden age Human Torch is 'an artificial human being'. Or not?
Answers on a postcard please.

Don't know what it says about me but The Vision, The Red Tornado and Robotman, and Jack Kirby's X-51 Machineman, [who I have just remembered] are among my favorite characters. Draw your own conclusions.

Fun fact: Mytek the Mighty was published in France many decades ago... under the "King Kong" name. So there are possibly a bunch of old French readers out there who are still thinking the actual King Kong used to be a robot.

Sadly, I've never read any of it. Nor did I read Archie, although I remember a bookstore from my student years that had a lot of pocket comics, and I remember I saw some Archie there, but never got to actually buy them.

Loved the Daleks from Doctor Who since I first saw them with the Ninth Doctor. I discovered the show back in 2010, but I recently learned that Tom Baker's episodes had been broadcasted from March 1989. Luckily, the modern series has been on a constant run from early on, and it was easy catching up on the newer seasons. I'm currently watching the latest season, and I miss the Daleks.
