Thanksgiving
« on: November 26, 2020, 09:03:01 AM »

I'm not American so I don't have the same cultural attachment to the holiday (though I did go to school in Plymouth - the real Plymouth, not the American imitation) but I do like the idea of listing the things you are thankful for this year.

Leaving aside all the mushy stuff you are expected to list (my dearest darling wife - how could I live without you etc), the five things I'm most thankful for this year are:

- Discovering Buck Ryan on Comic Book Plus
- Easy access to old Phantom strips on various websites
- After the forced absence, the relaunch of European Handball and Basketball leagues
- My local Lidl launching black pudding sausages and spicy rotwurst
- The fact that miraculously my car after going three days without starting suddenly started perfectly first time and has not shown any problems since. No one can explain it, not even the Dacia mechanic. I put it down to St Morris, the patron saint of old bangers.

What are you thankful for?

I'm not American either, but, avoiding all that slushy, mushy, queezy-making stuff, I am thankful for Chanel 5 showing live Monday Night Football.  All other NFL games are on pay for view. Just as well I don't subscribe as I've been a Bengals fan since the days of Kenny Anderson. Sad.
Discovering Jarvis Pickle pies.  Hand made in Eyemouth.
The local garden centre who delivered a load of plants in the early days of lockdown.
Great conversations and info exchanges with the amazing folk on CB+
My pal Vince who keeps me entertained by sending me lots of great audio.

I?m thankful for my happiness, well-being, and the potential for things to always get better, whether around me or elsewhere.

Also, the first Thanksgiving cover (Famous Funnies #16, November 1935):

Oddly just last night on PBS they showed parts of the original journal of the commander of the Mayflower company.
He wrote Plymouth as "Plimouth".
I'd noticed that the printing of some pre 19th century bibles I have often varies from modern spelling and the shape of the lettering , S is more like a lower case f among other things and in even older English a Y denotes a "th" sound. So the pub signs we see that say "Ye Old ____" are actually saying " The Old ___".
Few actors or Directors ever catch this when making historical films.
That might explain why a y was not used in the word Plymouth.
