Happy Birthday today to Stan Lee - he would have been ninety-eight.

What's your favourite Stan Lee story?

I think mine would be the death of Gwen Stacy - that really caught me by surprise. I'm not sure if Stan actually wrote it but I'm prepared to bet he gave it the nod.

Um, no, Gerry Conway is notorious for having written that and starting the comic book tradition for comic book deaths.
I have no information on what Stan thought about that plot idea.

Quote
He is known for co-creating the Marvel Comics vigilante antihero the Punisher and scripting the death of the character Gwen Stacy during his long run on The Amazing Spider-Man. At DC Comics, he is known for co-creating the superhero Firestorm, the creation of the character Jason Todd and the villain Killer Croc, and for writing the Justice League of America for eight years. Conway wrote the first major, modern-day intercompany crossover, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man.

He also created the Jackal and so is responsible for all that clone nonsense. So he didn't do Spiderman any favors.

I don't have a Stan story tho.

I have no information on what Stan thought about that plot idea.

According to an interview with John Romita in Comics Scene magazine last century, Stan felt the book had stagnated and wanted to shake it up. Romita suggested that Peter had too many girlfriends, and while Stan hated it, he realized that killing Gwen Stacy would have the most emotional impact.

That being said, I believe there's a Gerry Conway interview out there where he takes all the blame with no mention of Romita and Lee.

What's the real story? *shrug* No idea.
