Red Circle Discussion
« on: March 30, 2010, 05:45:33 PM »

Check out the discussion on Jim Shelley's Flashback Universe site, about DC's use of Archie's Red Circle properties, then contribute to the discussion there on here at GAC.

http://flashbackuniverse.blogspot.com/2010/03/baffling-mysteries-at-dc.html

I think that GAC does more justice to keeping these characters alive than DC ever will.

And yet another proof that you can't do jack if you're in it just for the monies.  ::)

Also, their plans to beat Marvel by going into hyperproduction, very Holywood-y.And we've all seen how that turned out.  :-\

Anyone think something similar might happen with their THUNDER Agents?

DC has had the rights to the THUNDER agents for some time and there was talk of using them next after the RED CIRCLE and FIRST WAVE were settled in.

I think it was a mistake to throw out the legacy aspects of the RED CIRCLE heroes (1940's-1980's) Just look at the JSA - a book built on Legacy and one of DC's top titles.

John Carbonaro who owned the rights to the Thunder Agents took one look at how DC Comics planned to 'reimagine' them some five or six years ago and promply gave orders that the plug should be pulled and all work was stopped with two issues completed and a third underway.

Now sadly he is dead and the Thunder Agents are once again left to DC's not so tender mercys  :(

Agreed. I signed up for the books when DC said that these were going to be the real versions of the characters, not reimaginings ala Impact. What a farce that was. They may have had the same names, but when you change the backstories and costumes... Not to mention they started out with some of the lesser known characters. (The Web and Inferno? Really?) Hangman should have had his own book, but only after introducing and killing off his brother, The Comet. The Shield should have been FBI, or at least CIA, and not military, and the whole lot of them should have been in their own universe where The Shield, Wizard, Hangman, and Black Hood could have been the top heroes.

There is so much potential with these characters, but nobody ever gets them right.

Eric,

As it is, since DC is only licensing these characters, I wager that their books aren't even taking place on Earth-1 of the DC 52 Universe structure. I am one of those who like the idea of Earth-B, so I think of these current RC books as taking place there.  ;D

Actually, nowadays, the primary DC Universe is on what is called "New Earth" ("New" after the Crisis on Infinite Earths), not Earth-1. The Red Circle characters are indeed a part of "New Earth".

More info on the universe(s) at large at http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Multiverse

I find DC's finite mutliverse much better than Marvel's infinite universes.

Denny's Geek-Fu is making me sad  ;D ;D ;D because I cut my teeth on DC's output of anything GA related during my youth. I read fanzines, joined comics clubs, bought every reprint that I could afford and KNEW that I was a Geek-Lord of the DC Multiverse. I haven't been solid since dang 'ol Crisis & Zero-Hour!  ;D ;D

DC has always treated their past with respect. Ok, there was that period when Mike Carlin was the Line Editor at DC and treated the JSA like crap - ending the 1991 Justice Society regular series at issue #10 - sales were good but he was on his "old heroes don't sell", then the whole Zero Hour thing.

Thank goodness for Mark Waid and his run on Flash at the same time - giving us loads of Jay, Johnny Quick and taking Quicksilver and turing him into "Max Mercury".
