The illustrations seem more like 1930s than 1951, although some of the technology is new. It's probably the art style. Did British soldiers still wear WWI-style helmets in 1951? And did they really call a flame-thrower "the lifebuoy?"

Answer is yes to both. Only later in the war did the British adopt a more modern helmet for their paratroopers.

Unfortunately my neighbor who was a machinegunner mistook a squad of British paratroopers for German Fallshirmjager because the new British helmet too closely resembled the German paratrooper helmet. He fired on them and ignited a serious blue on blue incident in which a number of allies were killed.

The original british design for a flame thrower used a simple automobile innertube incased in a metal housing to act as the compressed air tank. The effect was much like an older style life ring strapped to the operator's back.
