Gold / Silver question
« on: June 26, 2022, 02:45:51 PM »

Hey all, newbie here.

So, thanks in advance to any welcomes coming my way. Fantastic website!

I am not complaining, but just out of curiosity I wanted to ask.

Were there any Golden / Silver age comics that were cover-to-cover stories or just the shorts?

I am already reading Commander Battle and the Atomic Sub #1 (great comic) and was curious if there were others.

Dell's One Shot series regularly published book-length stories in their adventure (i.e. not funny-animal) books. Of course movie adaptations were full-length. Dell's novel adaptations also tended to be book-length, for example their Luke Short and Zane Grey adaptations. Books with continuing characters were more likely to have two stories per issue, but in late 40s and early 50s Dells they frequently got long stories. A random example is O.S. 269, Johnny Mack Brown. Johnny gets a full 48 pages to strut his stuff. The stories often continued over the inside back and back covers. You were out of luck if you got a coverless copy.

After Western Publishing and Dell Comics split around 1962, Dell published numerous full-length stories. These included both licensed TV characters like Cain's Hundred or Follow the Sun and their original characters, including Kona, Monarch of Monster Isle and Space Man.

When a title was offered by subscription postal regulations required more than a single story if the publisher wanted the cheaper second-class mailing privileges. That meant an issue was either split between two stories featuring the lead character or a long lead story and a shorter backup feature. Text stories were included because postal regulations also demanded that second-class mail magazines have some text, not just comics.

Give Dell a look-see. You might find some books that appeal to you.

Hey crashryan, thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

In an odd coincidence, no sooner than I posted my question the very first publisher I was looking through was Dell / Western. I just didn't realize they had some many longer stories.

Just on first perusal I am definitely going to read a number of these. My reading list is definitely getting longer.

If you go to the British section and look for Super Detective Library and Thriller Picture Library, many of them are one story issue's, and there is some excellent art  to wallow in.  Schoolgirls Picture  library is the same.

I have to wonder how many old pervs rushd home from the newsstand with a copy of Schoolgirls Picture Library hidden under their coat only to be greatly didapointed on opening it.

I would assume tho, that there were more than a few older brothers who read their sister's copies.
Mine didn't read comics at all but they did read [British Papers] Jack and Jill and Playhour when we were all very young, and I did read those!

If anyone is interested and still checking in on this post, I have found another one.

Captain Silvers Log of the Sea Hound (Avon).

The first one, at least, is a full-length story.

I liked it.

Appears to be a comic adaptation of an old radio show.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. I remember listening to it.
