Female reporters in Golden Age comics
« on: September 12, 2022, 10:44:55 PM »

Hi everyone

I've started compiling a list of female reporters in Golden Age comics just out of interest. I'm defining reporters fairly broadly to include women who wrote or took photographs for any newspapers or magazines, or those involved in television or film news. Lois Lane is the big one, of course, but I've found a few others on this site and some other readers have also given me some leads. Here's my list so far. Some of them were in supporting casts and didn't last long, but others had their own stories. Do you know of any others?

Major Characters:

Lois Lane
Vicki Vale
Brenda Starr
Jane Arden
Patty O'Day
Gail Porter
Iris West (Silver Age)

Supporting Cast:

Belle Wayne/Owl Girl
Thelma Gordon (the Hangman's partner)
Barbara Blake (in 'The Mad Hatter')
Zona Henderson (in 'Amazing Man Comics' #11)
Nancy (in 'The Shark' in 'Amazing Man Comics' #11)

Thanks!

Here are a couple girl reporters I found on CB+:

Jenny, Girl Reporter (British one-shot), Schoolgirls' Picture Library 064--nice art!

Joan Mason, Reporter
(Fox), appeared in Blue Beetle and Everybody's Comics

Barbara "Babs" Sutton, Kip "Black Hood" Beals' girlfriend, was a reporter who played a big part in many cases

Midge Martin, Girl Reporter (Star) appeared in 4 issues of School-Day Romances. A high school girl, her tales were more school humor-romance stories than adventures

Molly O'Moore co-starred with Scoop Scanlon (she got top billing) in several late issues of Temerson's Cat-Man Comics. They were rival reporters with a love-hate relationship

Thanks heaps for those. I'll add them to my list and look them up.

3 British films from the 50's feature the same characters and a female reporter is one of the stars, beating her boyfriend/fiancee to the scoop.  John Bentley (Paul Temple, The Toff) in 2 as Mike Billings and Robin Bailey in the other as Billings. In Diplomatic Corpse, Susan Shaw plays Jenny Drew.
In Final Appointment, Eleanor Summerfield is Jenny.
The 3rd is Stolen Assignment with Hy Hazell as Jenny.
Good fun films.  Worth checking YouTube.
